DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
Ramón Rivero Carrió manufactures handles, door knockers, aldabas (door knockers), locksmithing elements (handles, bolts, keyholes, and special types of nails), andirons for chimneys, bars for doors or windows…
To that aim he uses traditional tools: hammers, pincers, claveras (used to form the head of the nails), riveting pins, punches and prints, files, collaring bolts, hand vises, carbon forge, gas gorge, anvils, manual bending machines for steel sheets, jack and drop hammers, stamping plates, manual shears, bacaladeras, manual shears for angled splints and T-splints, manual shears with a pedal, manual shears for steel sheets, etc. He complements these tools with more updated ones: electrical welding, autogenous welding, plasma cutting, and manual voluteadoras, horizontal saws, vertical saws, electrical friction presses, mitre saws, circular steel saw blades, band saws for iron and small band saws for wood.
The vast majority of the updates that can be carried out regarding the old traditional procedures save time but generally devalue the quality of the manufactured pieces. Therefore, the quality of these pieces tends to be worse. The only machinery which does not alter the results are the saws or shears, the metallic sheets before actually starting to work the piece, or the trip hammers and drop hammers to forge, which save efforts since they substitute the physical strength of the blacksmith for mechanical one.
APPRENTICESHIP
Initially self-taught. Later, he has attended different courses at the Crafts Centre in León, a module on Forge lasting two years at the School of Arts and Crafts in Salamanca and some other monographic courses.
