David Martínez Ruiz started working in traditional construction at an early age, doing a range of masonry work.
His work today focuses on recovering and executing stuccowork, a rendering technique involving the application of a putty with fine particle sizes for which David uses natural materials… such as lime, which is then polished. Reproducing dilapidated stuccos is another task he often undertakes. He also does sgraffiti, which involves applying various layers of mortar and then removing parts of the outer layers following a decorative pattern, leaving the deeper, differently coloured layers of mortar visible.
David has also built many roof structures, notably including brick vaulting – self-bearing masonry erected without falsework in which the bricks are laid edge-on with plaster in an optimal solution for covering irregular spaces given its versatility.
Structural reinforcement, especially in old farmhouses, always with a wholly traditional process, is another job he often does.
David began his career at the age of 16 with his father in the family refurbishment firm. Following this apprenticeship he graduated as a journeyman, leading building sites of various sizes. In 2007 he joined the firm Chroma, where he did stuccowork and became familiar… with other traditional building systems. In 2010 he formed his own team with which he does all kinds of building work, from masonry to silicate finishes.
Since 2007 he has given courses with Chroma on the various loads in buildings according to their time of construction; stucco composition, iconography and textures through various periods; and hot-ironed renderings and their textures or sgraffiti.
He has delivered various workshops, including the Chroma open-day workshop… in 2012 or stucco workshops for architecture students at Escuela Sert and the Barcelona Institute of Architects, or at the 2014 Tavertet Sustainable Architecture Congress.
Notable examples of his work include:
