ACTIVITY
Miguel Ángel has specialised over the years in the gilding of religious objects, setting out from the craft technique used in his picture-framing workshop. He decorates and restores mostly processional image carriers and floats, applying many finishes, ornaments and materials as requested by his clients.
He… uses the water-gilding technique, which is uncommon in Castilla–La Mancha. In restorations, his work process starts with sanding away all the layers of varnish so as to find and repair damaged areas of wood. He then prepares a base of gesso with several layers and coats this with bole pigment, to which the gold leaf adheres. Finally he applies the gold, wetted in water so as to soften the layers of gesso, and polishes up the gold surface by burnishing it.
TRAINING
Miguel Ángel started in the craft of gilding by using the technique in his family’s picture-framing workshop. Since 1990 the family business has been devoted to all sorts of framing, with a wide range of finishes including gold and silver with water. Thus he developed… the craft technique to the point of being able to combine this trade with the restoration and redecoration of religious craftwork, specialising in processional image carriers and floats.
