Hórreos Ovín is a carpentry firm specialised in making and restoring hórreo granaries and watermills, along with roofs, porches and gazebos, using traditional carpentry techniques.
Making an hórreo granary involves designing and building the components in Alfredo’s workshop and then transporting them to the site for… assembly. First the pegollo saddle stones are erected. Then, with the aid of a loader crane, the various parts are put in place and finally fitted together.
Chestnut wood, easier to work than oak, is the material used in restoring hórreos. Chestnut is a durable hardwood that grows in the region and so is optimal for this application.
The manual tools usually found in Alfredo’s workshop include chisels, handsaws and hammers, used alongside power tools such as a band saw, a thicknesser, a mortising jig and a spindle moulder.
Alfredo Rodríguez also makes all sorts of wooden roofs, whether with trusses, slotted beams or rafters.
Alfredo began working in carpentry at the age of sixteen as an apprentice in Ebanistería Hermanos Granda in Nava (Asturias).
