Calle Ciudad Real, 6 – 45128 Menasalbas
Antonio Sánchez has been a craft woodworker for over 20 years, producing mostly woodcarvings, though his background in carpentry allows him to make any wooden architectural item. His work includes religious objects and projects for processional confraternities such as image carriers, floats or restorations, along… with bespoke items for private clients, such as joinery, wooden ceilings, etc.
He selects materials for each job directly, and with his hands, a mallet and a gouge he is able to meet any commission. He works with hardwoods, chiefly Brazilian cedar, walnut or beech for interiors, and for exteriors, oak and American ash.
As to his work process, Antonio receives ready-sawn timber from the sawmill, which he first cuts and planes to prepare it for working. After making sketches, he sets about marking and carving the wood.
He inherited his craft from his father and grandfather, both of whom were woodworkers. He worked in his father’s woodshop from the age of 16, learning the craft by gouging slots in doors in the traditional way, among other tasks. He soon took a particular… interest in carving, which he learnt in a self-taught way. This led him to set up his own workshop, which is always open to anyone interested.
He has done a great range of work, notably including an image carrier for the Venerable Confraternity of Christ of Forgiveness–Float of Christ’s Exaltation (for Easter processions in Cuenca)
Other works of his are an image carrier for the Holy Burial in Manzanares (province of Ciudad… Real), a kneeler for the Church of San Esteban in Cuenca, and an image carrier for the Pietà of Menasalbas (province of Toledo)
