Francisco Miguel Díaz has been doing stonework for countless applications in building for nearly 50 years. He masters the techniques involved in various forms of stonemasonry: walls, arches, basins, troughs, fountains, etc.
He normally uses stone to be found on the land where he carries out… each job. He also often uses volcanic stone.
The tools he uses in such work are diamond-tipped chisels, linga ropes for hoisting loads, disc cutters, etc.
One of the tasks in which Francisco Miguel is most experienced is wall-building: dressing stones to give them smooth faces, trampeado arrangement of corners, techniques for making a wall flush and plumb, etc.
Francisco Miguel’s teacher was his father, a stonemason of La Palma, who began to teach his son when aged just twelve.
He has taught stone-laying techniques to over a hundred people who have worked with him over the years.
