GRETA (Group for the Recovery and Study of Traditional Architecture) is an association founded in 2015 as a non-profit entity and made up of practitioners and anyone else interested in the preservation of anonymous architectural heritage. The association is devoted to the study and restoration… of traditional architecture with the aims of promoting good conservation interventions and raising awareness in society, as regards both professionals and the general public.
Currently GRETA has some 280 members, with diverse profiles: technicians, specialists, builders, suppliers of materials or ordinary citizens, all with a love of heritage.
The association has three main lines of work:
Line 1: Planning and urbanism
Line 2: Research and outreach
Line 3: Training
Unió d’Empresaris de la Construcció (UEC) was set up in 1977 as a continuation of the former Builders’ Union. It is a business organisation assembling nearly 700 companies in the building industry in Girona province. Its aims are to defend the interests of building firms and to provide services to help them function smoothly.
It has departments devoted to employment, technical services, legal services and training, and the latter has facilities for delivering instruction in the theory and practice of building trades.
It may be contacted by the email address uec@uecgirona.com or on the phone number 972 21 36 72.
Since 2014 the GRETA association and UEC have worked together in organising Master’s Courses in Traditional Building.
The Traditional Building Master’s Course consists of four modules, each organised around basic materials of our architectural tradition and the associated techniques:
– Module 1. Stone
– Module 2. Lime, plaster and colour
– Module 3. Ceramics and earth
– Module 4. Wood, iron, glass and heating/cooling
Each module has… a duration of 40 hours and is delivered on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, over a total of 5 to 8 weeks. Two modules are offered yearly, in the spring and autumn. The modules may be taken independently and the classes are in person, combining theory, practice, workshops and site visits. The programme is intended to develop a knowledge of traditional techniques for application in both restoration and new building.
Detailed information on each of the modules is to be found on the UEC website.
The courses are subsidised and free of charge for trainees. In order to take part it is necessary to be currently working, either in employment or self-employed. The subsidy conditions do not allow participation by students, retirees, civil servants or unemployed persons. It is also… a precondition to be a member of GRETA or UEC.
