José Carlos is a builder whose speciality is making timbrel vaults (also known as Catalan or shell vaults) of all sizes, as well as wooden structures.
Timbrel vaults can cover large spans without a need for falsework and with a vault thickness of less than 5… cm. This technique has been used widely over the years, especially where wood has been scarce. Today countless qualities are attributed to these vaults and many are interested in learning the craft, which accounts for the popularity of the timbrel vault workshops held in Chiloeches (Guadalajara province) with José Carlos as instructor. The materials used are light brick and plaster, which sets quickly, allowing an overarching shell to be formed with the aid of guidelines, without any auxiliary structure.
José Carlos belongs to a fifth generation of a family of builders and carpenters, and learnt the trade from his relations.
