Miguel Ángel Jiménez Escudero specialises in hand-carved stonework. Starting with a stone block, which may be of various kinds and origins, the tools he uses mostly are pencils, round mallets and chisels.
He has produced a great range of work across the country, most notably sculptures,… coats of arms and fountains, as well as many structural and decorative features
He seeks to achieve the right texture and colour tone for each article, as all of his work is blended masterly with its setting and with the style and context of the adjoining stonework. He is also proficient in the technique of aging stone.
He is self-taught, both artistically and technically. He began restoring assorted architectural elements as of the age of 13, working with paint, wood and stone, before centring his practice on stone-carving.
For four years he was a master at the San Agustín de Dueñas Convent School in Palencia, later known as the Canal de Castilla School.
He has worked for private clients, in public buildings, such as the seat of the government of Castilla y León, and on monuments, such as the memorial to the fallen at the Battle of Moclín. He has made sculptures all over Spain, crafting busts and… carvings on various scales.
Notable examples of his work on historic heritage are:
– Facade of the Church of Las Angustias in Valladolid
– Gothic capitals in the Palace of Benicarló in Valencia
– Restoration of a 12th-century alabaster figure in the León Cathedral Diocesan Museum
– Restoration of the Noviciate Chapel in Villagarcía de Campos
– Atrium of the Church of Santiago and interior pilasters of the Church of Santa Cruz in Medina de Rioseco
– Restoration of Gothic lions at the Palace of the Admirals of Castile in Medina de Rioseco, along with a full reproduction of the structural and decorative details of the facades and portals
