La Bóveda Fecit specialises in the building and restoration of windmill structures in La Mancha, and thereby helps preserve this traditional heritage.
The firm seeks always to work with the woods used of old, such as pinewood from the province of Cuenca. So Juan normally finds… sawmills working with this particular wood, and on occasion he even chooses a tree to be felled for pieces requiring specific woods, such as black poplar. He also often uses reclaimed timber, which he restores and reuses in wooden mill mechanisms.
He works with traditional tools, such as an axe for dressing or roughing, an adze and a hand plane, as well as other planes depending on the work to be done: moulding, thicknessing, groove-cutting, etc.
This master craftsman has also performed other carpentry work, as well as woodwork restoration. For restorations he always does prior research to determine which wood was traditionally used in each case, respecting the character of each artefact.
Juan Bautista was trained in traditional structural carpentry from the age of 16 at the Molinos de Viento Trade School in Campo de Criptana, where he was involved in the two-year refurbishment of the machinery of a 16th-century windmill.
He then took a module on bespoke… furniture-making and carving in Almagro and subsequently he returned to Campo de Criptana, where he has continued to specialise in windmills.
