Mondovitral restores and conserves historic stained glass and creates new glasswork.
In new glasswork, among other techniques, they excel in the traditional crafts of came glass and stained-glass painting. The latter involves applying pigments to glass which is then fired at a temperature of 620ºC, giving… colour and also forming opaque lines and volume. Stained glass with lead came was one of the earliest artistic techniques used for sealing coloured windows. After 1000 years, the same materials are still used: strips of lead (came) and glass. The method is also unchanged: setting out from a full-scale model, templates are made for cutting the glass, the cut glass is fitted into a lead matrix, this is soldered with tin and finally the piece is cemented with putty. Stained glass with came certainly has a long life, as it is designed to bear stresses due to wind or small shifts in its frame, and it also allows for piecemeal work, such as when broken fragments need replacing, with no need to disturb the ensemble.
In restoration work, they follow a rigorous methodology to assess the state of stained glass and draw up detailed studies of the materials, any signs of deterioration and the interventions feasible, along with an inventory and history. This work normally involves coordinating teams of various practitioners in the world of restoration. In reward for such work they received the “Premio Nacional de Restauración 2017” and “Premi Restaura” awards for their work at the Boquería market in Barcelona.
Pepe Cubillo joined the Keshava stained-glass workshop in Barcelona in 1996 and subsequently took further training at Fundació Centre del Vidre de Barcelona, learning various contemporary and restoration techniques.
Ricardo was trained at Fundación Centro Nacional del Vidrio in Segovia, where he specialised in glass-painting, and… studied drawing and painting at the EASS Art School and the San Eloy School of Fine Art in Salamanca.
Ricardo is the founder of the art workshop Espai Medusa, where for more than 10 years he has given classes in drawing, painting and pictorial techniques on glass.
