Calle Demetrio Monteserín 10 – 24009 León
Agustín Castellanos has since 1999 been devoted to researching, recovering and disseminating the traditional craft techniques of Mudéjar carpentry, roof trusses, timber floor structures, wooden staircases and traditional and styled furniture, mainly through the Spanish Structural Carpentry Summer Courses and the Specialist and Annual Courses… at the León City Council Crafts Centre.
He is responsible chiefly for drawing up projects which are then executed in the workshop as practical exercises to help students understand the construction processes for various types of roof structure. These exercises have allowed him to explore such structures, from simple hip roofs with a ridge and rafters or with collar beams to more complex octagonal ones with twin moamar rafters at the hips, decorated with Mudéjar strapwork of interlaced laths and crossbars or with mixed techniques, as well as 16-sided five-section roof structures decorated with coffers, or even, as built in the summer of 2016, four segments of a rounded roof and ceiling framework webbed with ten-point stars.
The work he does and the practical exercises he sets in his courses follow the guidelines of old carpentry treatises, as well as the observations of Professor Enrique Nuere and other modern scholars.
As well as courses given at the Crafts Centre where he has taught since 1989, he has on many occasions delivered talks and practical courses in institutions such as the Santa Teresa Foundation in Ávila, the Cathedral de Santa María Foundation in Vitoria, the Escuela… de Artes y Oficios Foundation in Bogotá (Colombia), the Complutense University in Alcalá de Henares, the University of Málaga, the Cáceres Official Association of Technical Architects and Building Engineers, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Regional Crafts Centre in Castilla y León (CEARCAL) or the Government of Castilla y León.
