They manufacture and restore artistic mosaics for flooring, murals and paintings, wall finishings, partition walls and other architectural elements.
They mainly work with ceramics, stoneware and marble. They use both the direct technique on the surface to be covered and the indirect technique, where they first… carry out the mosaic in the workshop using a template and later on they place it in its final location.
They manufacture and restore mosaics of different types:
Roman: Marble mosaics or pâte de verre (or a combination of both materials) made of cube-shaped tiles of 1 centimetre approximately. They also carry out consolidations of original Roman mosaics using light panels in honeycomb shape.
Art nouveau: flooring made of squared marble tiles of about 2 centimetres approximately. Mural walls of squared ceramic tiles of about 2 centimetres approximately.
Trencandís (broken tile mosaics): mural walls and finishings made of irregular ceramic tiles of different sizes.
Mosaic Nolla: they retrieve and restore this type of stoneware flooring. They also carry out extensions and reduction of flooring, decorative borders and new floorings, always using original retrieved materials (Nolla pieces dating from approximately 1900).
The tools they use are the classic ones of the craft:
For the marble mosaics they use a bushing chisel and a cold set hammer.
For the ceramic mosaics they use widia pliers and manual cutters.
To these, one must add the necessary conventional construction tools (large wicker basket, bucket, palette, small palette, cement mixer, diamond core cutter, grinder, multifunction rotor, trowel, plumb bob, drawing pen, rulers, squadrons, mallets, hammers, chisels, etc.) and other drawing implements (Kraft paper, carbon paper, coloured pencils, rulers, square, bevel, cellulosic glue, etc.).
Currently they also carry out some designs and projects with the aid of software applications such as Photoshop, AutoCAD or Rhinoceros. These help to adjust the images and the drafts to the measurements and real locations of the project, as well as helping in the creation of plans and presentations for clients.
Escola-Taller del Laberint d´Horta, Barcelona. Theoretical and practical learning with Lluís Brú, an outstanding mosaic manufacturer, son and grandson of the famous mosaic manufacturers of the Talleres Brú.
His learning process was based on the creation of works in the workshop using different techniques and different… styles (paintings with Roman marble motives, ceramic trencadís planters, finishings for balusters, etc.), and in the manufacture of restoration of emblematic buildings in Barcelona (marble flooring for the Casa Vicens, the Church of Sant Pau del Camp, the Church of Sant Pacià, etc. and ceramic finishings for the Casa Lleó i Morera, Hospital of Sant Pau, etc).
