Antonio Fernández Aguilar does stonework and stone sculpture. His output includes articles such as stone fountains, columns and capitals, coats of arms or low reliefs.
The material he uses habitually is Macael marble, naturally quarried, though he has also worked with Italian Carrara marble and other… Andalusian stones, such as white limestone and marble from the quarries of Cabra (Córdoba province) and Gilena (Seville province).
After first meeting a customer, Antonio prepares design drawings. He then selects the stone and the stonework begins: cutting blocks to measure, drawing the carving on them and roughing them with electric hand tools such as angle grinders with diamond discs, which facilitate the cutting process. After this rough work, he carves with a chisel and an air hammer.
Antonio taught himself, though his first contact with stone was through his father, who had a cast-stone workshop. Later he worked in a factory where he took an interest in carving, which has been his trade since then.
