The work done by Antonio Jesús Morillo is eminently manual, including restorations and reproductions of antique woodwork.
He starts his work process by selecting a piece of wood and preparing it to receive the design, which he makes himself. Once the workpiece is ready, he starts… carving with tools such as gouges, squares, handsaws, compasses, etc. This craftsman’s basic techniques are in any events patience, imagination and dedication.
He normally works in the traditional way, wholly by hand, except where there is a need for electric machinery, which he uses only on occasion. In restoration work, moreover, it is vital to follow traditional techniques. No other technology is normally needed for carving.
He started learning the craft in 1997, assisting his master, mentor and father Julio Morillo López according to the traditional system of learning, apprenticeship and guidance in a small Sevillian workshop. Today Antonio’s workshop is located in the Sevillian Business Park for Sacred Art.
Further to… this on-the-job training, he graduated in joinery and stone-carving at the Seville School of Arts and Crafts. He holds an Andalusian Government woodcarver’s craft certificate.
