Calle San Ignacio Nº 14 – 33205 Gijón
Christian Marne does all sorts of stonework, from basic stone-cutting to vaulting, ribbing and stereotomy work.
Much of his work is in the field of restoration, involving the modelling, casting, rebuilding and installation of historic building elements. He also makes stone sculpture, especially by direct carving,… although he also masters the pointing technique and the use of compasses for enlargements.
In stone sculpture and carving he is an advocate of manual cutting tools, as these prevent many microfissures from forming in the material due to impacts, and the same manual finishes can be given later without the stone needing to suffer so much.
But he does recommend the use of acetates and plastic products (transparent if possible) in making moulds for carving and installation tasks, such as mouldings, ribbing, etc., rather than traditional moulds made with cardboard, wood or metal.
He mounts exhibitions and demonstrations of traditional crafts at cultural fairs, meetings and events as well as at sculpture symposia, conferences and competitions.
He learnt his craft in training centres and stone workshops and in particular at the Oviedo Higher School of Art with the master stoneworkers Fernando Alba and José Ángel Nava, among others, as well as at the León Crafts Centre with Pedro García Primo, Miguel… Sobrino and Enrique Rabasa, inter alia. The workshops where he has received training notably include Asturiana de Talla, that of the master stonemason Jordi Martí (Lleida province), Scalpellino Trabajos en Piedra (León) and Canteros del Principado (Asturias).
