This is a family firm devoted to the craft of esparto, from harvesting esparto grass to making esparto products: rugs, wall coverings, wainscoting, lamps, panels, shelves, cachepots, blinds, mats, awnings, etc., made in different shapes and sizes and in a wholly traditional way.
The process starts… with the gathering of esparto grass in the mountains in July or August, using a picking tool known as cogedera, talisa, manil or palico – a steel or wooden rod 20-30 cm long and 2-3 cm in diameter.
The harvested esparto is then cleaned for the making of plaits, i.e. the strips of braided strands used in making esparto artefacts. Sheets of esparto matting are made by sewing these braided strips together using bone or metal needles that are made by the firm, with two-ply sisal or agave yarn. Once a sheet of the desired size has been woven, it is decorated and strengthened with braided strips forming a cross, sewn on with three-ply sisal yarn.
To make a blind, a 7 x 4 cm slat of treated wood is stapled to esparto matting and edged with strips of braided esparto, sewn on with three-ply sisal yarn. Eyebolts for hanging the blind are inserted in the slat along with one or two pulleys, according to size, for rolling and unrolling it with a 6 mm hemp string. At the bottom a 5 x 1.5 cm wooden lath is stapled to the esparto matting to add strength and solidity and is edged with a strip of braided esparto, sewn on with three-ply sisal yarn.
Esparto blinds can be made in different shapes and sizes: spooled on runners, arched, square, rectangular, etc.
For lamps, a structure is made using steel rods of various diameters to which shaped esparto fabric is applied and sewn on with fine hemp yarn.
Mats or reor matting are made in the same way as sheets of esparto, to the desired size. For round mats, the braided strips are shaped in spirals as they are sewn. For shelves, wood of suitable dimensions is lined with sewn esparto strips or sheets. Esparto panels or awnings have rings at the corners, also of esparto, for hanging.
These artisans learned their craft and continue learning by family inheritance, from parents and grandparents who worked with esparto and palm fibre all their lives.
