Diego is a master of the craft of carving stone and in particular of marble. He started out in the trade using traditional stonework techniques, such as quarrying or splitting stone with a bolster and roughing with a point chisel and mallet, and applying finishes… with tools such as toothed chisels. Currently he makes all sorts of high-precision architectural elements in limestone and marble, as well as much sculpture.
He uses both manual and machine tools as well as handheld electric devices, working stone in a traditional way. The main advantage of handheld electric tools is speed in work processes. Their disadvantage is that they generate airborne dust involving the use of air extractors and personal protective equipment, along with a higher risk of accidents.
In 1985-87 Diego was apprenticed to the British sculptor Alexander Socolov and worked alongside him in Spain, France and Ireland, learning and mastering traditional stone-carving techniques.
In 2002-07 Diego gave practical tuition in his workshop to Pascual Muñoz Martínez, José Antonio Cerezuela Montalvo, Rubén García Gómez and Álvaro Fernández Muñoz.
As a non-official trainer, in 2011-12 he gave a course on wall cladding and slate roofing in Tabernas (Almería province).
