Dorado y Restauración Abel Velarde are specialists in fine water gilding on wood as well as in the restoration of gilt artworks with any kind of substrate.
They use the traditional techniques:
– In preparing the wood they use organic or rabbit-skin glues. Then they apply a… filling of wood pulp to cover over flaws (holes, cracks, slits, etc.), and use cotton canvas to apply paint over the glue for each segment.
– Priming with calcium sulphate, as a substrate for gilding, which cannot be done directly on wood.
– Reworking of carvings with scrapers, rasps and gouges
– Sanding of the surface until it is fully polished.
– Gilding with fine 23 3/4 carat gold leaf and burnishing with agate stones, or imprinting with organic glue for nuances.
Abel Velarde learned the trade at the age of 18 as an apprentice in the workshop “Manolo y Antonio Doradores”, run by a relative. In 2003 he started up his own workshop in Seville.
From 2011 he attended the Seville Art School, where he received a… higher diploma in Art applied to Sculpture. Then at the Seville University Faculty of Fine Arts he gained a degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Goods in 2017.
Abel trained a group of pupils at the Seville Art School in 2012-13. In 2017 he collaborated with the lecturer Joaquín Arquillo in classes at the Faculty of Fine Arts, teaching gilding and stuccowork.
