Econstrucció is set up as a cooperative partnership, with a multidisciplinary team of specialists from the fields of architecture, restoration, engineering and environmental sciences whose paths joined in the recovery of traditional, more sustainable and more eco-friendly building techniques. Their work revolves especially around earthen… architecture, building with cane and the uses and applications of various local materials.
Nine out of ten of the tools that they use are manual, requiring no power supply. With these they build roofing and walling for homes of all sorts. They provide various shading, waterproofing and finishing solutions depending on the degree of performance and durability sought.
Building with cane involves making use of a material that has fallen into disuse and whose invasive character poses an environmental problem. So this is a building technique with an exceptionally slight impact and carbon footprint.
The team members have taken courses in a range of techniques, such as working with cane as a structural material with the Canya Viva association, or plasterwork in workshops given in Valencia Polytechnic University.
The affordable materials, the nature of the construction process and the fact that 90% of the cost of such construction is in labour make these techniques highly participatory and adaptable. So some projects have been conducted in the form of courses, with over 250 trainees.… Notable among these have been those run at Benidoleig (2012, two weeks),Ontinyent (2014, two weeks) or Altea (2015, three weeks).
Eco-Winery in Utiel-Requena (2013). Newly built winery with bearing walls of stone and traditional roofing of logs and wattle.
Refurbishment of a house in Alfàs del Pi (2015). Lime stuccos on walls and furnishings and suspended wattle.
Restoration of a historic 13th-17th-century wall in Gandía (2016).… Restoring and compacting a wall of rubble masonry with courses of brick; restoration of a plaster kitchen fireplace, and restoration and stabilization of a rammed-earth wall.
Restoration of a riurau arcaded grape-drying shed in Llíber (2017). Repair and partial rebuilding of stone walls and roofing.
