Ignacio Paniagua manufactures and restores woodwork and is a specialist at carving, sculpture and cabinetry.
He works always in his woodshop, where he starts by agreeing with the client on the work to be done and then making sketches and drawings of parts as required and… estimating the cost and the time to be spent. He then sets about the various joinery, woodturning, cabinetmaking and carving tasks involved. The finishes he applies are gold-leaf gilding, lacquers, polychromy, varnish and also metal polishing.
He works mostly for private clients and processional confraternities. He has made and contributed to the manufacture and restoration of various sacred art images, as well as floats and image carriers.
He learnt the craft from a tender age in the workshop of his father, whom he assisted as of the age of 12. He learnt such tasks as sanding, tracing, priming, sawing, waxing, varnishing, lacquering and gilding, up to the age of 20. After doing… his military service he set up the workshop in which he has been plying his trade ever since.
Notable among his recent work are jobs for:
The Confraternity of Saint Bartholomew (in San Bartolomé de las Abiertas): restoration of the saint’s float, gluing, creation of pieces, gold-leaf gilding, welding, polishing of brass candelabras and electrical fittings
Church of Los Santos Mártires (in Talavera de la… Reina): restoration and creation of new corbels and Solomonic columns in plateresque style, plus a lectern and a jardinière
Church of Santa María la Mayor (Talavera de la Reina): design and creation of three small altars and a column for images
Church of Parrilla: design and creation of the main altar and side adornments of columns with cherubs, gilded with gold leaf
Church of Cervera de los Montes: design and creation of an image carrier for the figure of Jesus of Nazareth
Cloistered Convent of Augustine Recollect Nuns (in Calzada de Oropesa): restoration of the chandelier in the nave and parts of the three altars. Creation of new pieces: two aisle chandeliers gilded with gold leaf, a small altar fitted in a wall niche for an image of Our Lady of Sorrows with gold leaf and green polychrome, an altar with a plateresque column base and gilded with gold leaf, and a lectern facing two Solomonic columns, also gilded.
