José Gómez de Bernardo, known as “Pepón”, specialises in Galician granite stonework in structures and building, ornamental work or sculpture. He is part of the team at the PCM+N workshop and also does self-employed jobs for private clients.
He has been involved in restoration and refurbishment… work on many churches and traditional houses in Galicia using the typical techniques of the stonemason’s trade, such as traditional masonry with rough stones or ashlars. He uses both traditional tools, such as club hammers, bull points, files or chisels, and tools of more recent design, such as air hammers or angle grinders.
He has also built slate roofs, though he does not do slate-roofing currently.
José did an advanced course in construction planning and scheduling and an intermediate course in roofing, specialising in slate, at the slate-roofing school of Barco de Valdeorras. He then began working in construction, laying slate roofs. Later he started refurbishing and building traditional Galician houses… and walls. To learn more about stonework and carving, he took a course at the stonework school in Poio (province of Pontevedra). He now works for the firm PCM+N, where he continues to master the stoneworker’s trade in his daily practice, using both traditional and more contemporary methods.
