Calle Santa Bárbara, 21 – 45161 Polán
Juan Luis is dedicated mainly to making altarpieces, procession floats and image carriers with various mortise-and-tenon techniques in wood, although he also produces bespoke furniture and wooden joinery and does other carving work.
He is also outstanding as a gilder, using the traditional techniques of water… gilding and agate burnishing with fine gold, or mixtion and water gilding with greasy mixtion and various drying periods.
As well as these techniques he applies fat and meagre lime renders with marbling and stuccos and natural pigments, and makes and applies his own patinas.
He started out in the trade by working in the family workshop, which give him a base allowing him to evolve in a self-taught way alongside many masters of traditional crafts, such as carvers, woodturners, stuccoists, gilders, etc.
Juan Luis has always sought to pass on his knowledge of his craft, so his workshop has received many students on placements from the Toledo Craft School as well as other workers and apprentices. These training has had various durations, from weeks to years, in… which he has given lessons in carpentry, joinery, varnishing, stuccowork, gilding, jointing, gluing and assembly.
