José Morillo is a restorer specialised in architectural heritage who is outstanding for his command of rendering techniques. In recent years he has acquired much experience in the restoration of Extremaduran limewashed sgraffiti, chiefly in the 16th-century Renaissance style. Currently he is one of the… few specialists in Extremadura to master the original technique.
Given his experience as a restorer and his family roots in masonry (his father’s trade), he also masters the techniques of mortar restoration: pointing, plastering, coatings and stuccos.
He has also applied renders over large surfaces, such as the vaults of the Portico of Glory at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
He uses these techniques both in restorations and in new work.
José Morillo studied Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, specialising in Restoration & Conservation, with training in drawing, painting and volume.
Subsequently at the same university he took a postgraduate course in stone conservation. He learned the more technical side of mortar application through helping… his father in masonry work.
