This workshop restores, refurbishes and repairs historic woodwork (structural carpentry: roof, floor and other structures), external joinery (doors and windows), galleries and hórreo and panera granaries (the latter having six or more staddle stones). It also makes traditional furniture (chairs, chests, trunks, tables, etc.) and… new carpentry and joinery in general (doors, windows, porches, flooring, wardrobes, etc.).
Julio César’s firm – La Escuela – reproduces the traditional carpentry models of Asturias and the neighbouring regions using mostly local materials, along with some timber harvested from nearby controlled forests. It also adjusts these models to cater for today’s customs and ways of life while seeking to preserve the essence and beauty of their forms.
Julio César has been working as a carpenter for over 15 years. He is also a history graduate, a member of the Amigos del Hórreo association and co-author of the studies of Asturian granaries Arquitectura popular en Gozón. De casas, hórreos y paneras. Aproximación al origen del estilo Carreño and Estudio sobre los hórreos y paneras de Bueño, parroquia de San Pedro de Ferreros, Ribera de Arriba.
Notable examples of his work are the restoration of the hórreo granary at Pillarno in La Buría; relocation of a hórreo granary for Carlos Lorenzana in El Escaplero (Las Regueras); restoration of a panera granary for Enrique Luis de Sanzabornín (Gozón); porches for houses in… Candás; relocation and restoration of a hórreo granary in El Pedregal (Lorenzana, Carreño); or roofing of a panera granary in San Pedro (Bárcena del Monasterio, Tineo).
