Martín Mendieta Pérez does all kinds of natural stonework using traditional methods. Only in the early stages of roughing does he use electric machinery. He works with materials from near his workshop, such as sandstone and limestone, as well as marble, alabaster or Floresta stone.
He… works to his own designs always using direct carving methods, mostly with point chisels, flat chisels, tooth chisels and picks.
The blocks he uses are quarried traditionally, with metal wedges and a club hammer. His day-to-day work includes traditional stonemasonry, fountains, jardinières, coats of arms or sculpted facade ornaments.
Martín Mendieta Pérez first came into contact with stonework in 1986 at the Trade School of Molina de Aragón, where he was taught by the master stoneworker Maximino Aguado. On completing a first two-year course he went on working with Maximino, learning the basics of… stonemasonry as well as how to use drawings and squares. Since then he has continued learning in a self-taught way.
In 1996-98 he was a stonework instructor at the Trade School of Molina de Aragón.
Notable examples of his work are ornamental public fountains in Tierzo, Castellar de la Muela, Cubillejo de la Sierra, Terzaga, Saúca, Mantiel, Yebes or Molina de Aragón.
He also built the arcade of the Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Buen Labrado in Ablanque, and has done… diverse building work as well as making coats of arms, reliefs and sculptures.
