Calle Pere Serafí, 39 – 08012 Barcelona
A master artisan mosaicist since 2004, Livia makes reproductions and new mosaics and also performs restorations.
In 2007 she undertook a restoration of the mural mosaics in the crypt of the Sagrada Familia Basilica in Barcelona, originally executed by the Italian mosaicist Mario Maragaliano with the… Roman tessellatum technique. Some of the mosaic tiles were coming loose due to damp in the wall, so her task consisted of preparing new fragments and fitting them on the crypt wall. This involved making tracings and producing tesserae of enamelled ceramic with gold leaf and mounting them on a fibreglass mesh for subsequent installation in the crypt. The binder used was lime mortar, as in the rest of the mosaic. Her tools included a mosaic hammer and hardie anvil, mosaic nippers, a mechanical chopper for hard materials, and an electric cutter with a diamond disc for marble and ceramics.
Another of her restoration projects concerned the mosaics on the arch at the entrance to the Boquería market in Barcelona, in 2013. In this case she had to remove the tiles from the arch pillars for restoration in her workshop, as the pillar structure was damaged. Once the mosaics had been refurbished, she refitted them onto the repaired pillars.
The issues faced in mosaic restorations chiefly involve finding the same materials – ceramics, stone, marble, etc. – as used originally, recreating lost mosaic fragments, removing and stabilising mounting surfaces, and restoring mosaics weakly attached to walls or pavements due to crumbling of the original mortars, damp infiltration, etc. On occasion the gold-leaf tesserae need to be aged so as to match the originals.
Her workshop has also produced new creations and designs, such as mosaics for the Catalan Art Nouveau Museum in Barcelona in 2009, with a panel at the museum entrance, mural mosaics in the interior and also mosaics to cover the lower-floor columns. In this case the techniques used were trencadís (with irregular fragments), tessellatum and opus sectile. The material employed was enamelled ceramic and part of the process was done in the workshop, namely the mounting of mosaics on fibreglass mesh and the cutting and numbering of panels to facilitate subsequent installation on the walls and columns.
The workshop also worked on a replica of mosaics for the facade of Casa Lleó i Morera in Barcelona in 2012, requiring prior research with archive documents and photos. An original mosaic which had disappeared in the 1940s was replicated for installation at its original location in this Art Nouveau house by Lluís Domenech i Montaner. The mosaic was executed in the workshop, keeping as close as possible to the original by the mosaicist Lluís Brú.
