Nacio is an expert in artistic wood-carving and timber joinery and carpentry.
He does carpentry and joinery in general, and especially building envelopes, front doors, galleries, balconies and wooden staircases. He also produces traditional furniture, whether vernacular or in particular styles, as well as new designs.
He… normally makes products with local woods, preferably chestnut.
He also restores woodwork, Asturian heritage and antique furniture.
Nacio started out in the craft at the Gijón Trade School in 1988, where he was trained as a cabinetmaker and carver under the guidance of Rogelio Riesgo, a renowned master artisan, and specialised in ornamental furniture carving and ethnography. In 1991-93 he received further… training in Rogelio Riesgo’s workshop, where he honed his carver’s skills.
In 1991-2005, he gave specialist wood-carving courses for various Asturian bodies such as the Department of Culture, town halls or the Spanish Red Cross, among others, with various participants and levels: from courses for trainers to workshops for social integration, such as ones given at… the Asturian prison of Villabona.
In 1993-97 he worked as a tenured trainer at the El Prial Training and Rural Development Centre in Infiesto (municipality of Piloña), teaching wood-carving in specialist reskilling courses for workers in the joinery and furniture trade and also for students still learning the craft.
Since 1997 he has run a wood-carving school located in his own workshop.
Currently the workshop combines its woodwork output with teaching at various levels, as it is accredited for the delivery of courses linked to certificates awarded under the Employment Ministry’s vocational catalogue and has extensive experience in woodwork training. As an approved training centre it offers courses of various kinds, from occupational instruction to amateur wood-carving, as well as intensive courses on particular techniques or the handling of machines, continuing training, reskilling of wood industry workers, etc.
Nacio’s work involves the restoration and manufacture of hardwood carpentry (external joinery, front doors, balconies, staircases, etc.). He also collaborates with various restoration and refurbishment firms, advising them and supplying them with wood-carvings. He has also restored furniture and produced decorative carvings for several historic… building refurbishments in Asturias as well as restoring religious images for various Asturian churches.
