ACTIVITY
Carlos Sánchez Mayo makes all kinds of bespoke craft woodwork: staircases, enclosures, furniture, windows, doors, carriage gates, floor structures, roof trusses, floor surfaces and wooden structures generally.
In plying his trade Carlos has sought to preserve the traditional building techniques which he has progressively mastered through… training and experience. He thus employs traditional systems and building crafts, with joints and assemblies suited to each task. He works with wholly natural materials, enhancing the quality of what he produces.
He also does woodwork restorations (of structures, doors, windows, etc.), a field in which he has acquired wide experience from his training and years of teaching, and also now in his own craft workshop.
TRAINING
He learnt his trade first in a course on elementary techniques of restoration and refurbishment of artistic heritage given by the Centro Histórico Trade School in León (now the León Crafts Centre), and through being a specialist worker in the Centro Histórico Restoration Placement Module.
He… has also taken specialist and refresher courses and seminars:
– “Cultural Heritage Security” workshop in Salamanca
– Development course for instructors within the FIP Plan for training and employability: “Numerical control in wood-machining equipment” at the National Training Centre in Santiago de Compostela
Various courses at the Castilla y León Regional Crafts Centre:
– Introduction to the building of wooden staircases
– CADWORK: Design of wooden structures
– Design of strapwork with AutoCad
TEACHING
He has been an instructor in many traditional carpentry and restoration courses since 1997, including at the Camino de Santiago Trade School in San Andrés del Rabanedo (León province), the Abelló Centre for León Town Council’s URBAN Plan, the Trade School of Puente Castro, the… Alquite Spare Time School, the Equal León Actúa Youth Centre, the Municipal Building Trades School in León, INEM employment service courses at the provincial prison, etc.
