Pasaje de las Golondrinas, 8 – 29650 Mijas Pueblo

Sonia is a craftsperson specialised in plaited esparto grass. She works in Mijas (Málaga province), where she also sources the raw materials of her trade.

The craft of working esparto is one of the few that is still plied wholly traditionally. The gathering of esparto in… the Sierra de Mijas is still done manually, as is the braiding of strands of fibre and subsequent sewing. The implements used are needles of various sizes and waxed hemp yarn. The only novelties introduced into Sonia’s craft have been in design.

Sonia belongs to the Mijas Craft Association, made up of artisans who ply traditional trades using raw materials from the region. She also gives classes in her village, so that this traditional trade may be passed on to another generation.

Sonia learned the craft in the workshop of the last esparto craftworker of Mijas Pueblo, Francisco Moreno Tamayo.
Sonia gives esparto-braiding courses in her workshop at the Puerta del Ágora Craft Cooperative in Mijas, where she teaches groups of 2-10 adults. Some classes are devoted to particular aspects and others are delivered monthly for beginners in the craft.
