Camiño Cemieiras, 3 – 36313 Vigo, Pontevedra
Vidrieras Cosmo was founded in 1988 by Manuel Costas and Antonio Molares. Both were craft glaziers in the glass decoration section of the La Belga glass workshop in Vigo. Currently Cristina Molares, daughter of Antonio and also an artisan glazier, heads the workshop.
The work of… Antonio and Manuel and their passion for stained glass have helped keep the art of glass alive in Galicia. Over their years in the trade they have undertaken numerous projects and restorations that may be seen in churches, cathedrals and the buildings of public bodies and private entities in the Pontevedra area.
Cristina makes stained-glass windows using traditional fired engraving techniques with came profile, muffle patterns and grisailles. With these techniques she achieves an interplay of light and shade, giving realism to the image or pattern to be depicted. Her creations range from undecorated lead-came glasswork to landscape and picture windows with a realistic touch.
One of the aims pursued by Vidrieras Cosmo is that the art of decorated glass, which in recent years has received little support in our country, should endure.
Vidrieras Cosmo is a workshop registered with the “Artesanía de Galicia” quality mark awarded by the Galician Public Craft Foundation.
Antonio Molares learned the craft of traditional stained-glass decoration from the master glazier Manuel Costas.
Cristina Molares learned from both Manuel Costas and Antonio Molares, and from an early age would often be in the workshop watching what they were doing. She has also collaborated in… various projects as an interior designer in the sphere of craft glasswork. In 2020 she was awarded the Galician government’s craftsperson’s certificate.
The largest project undertaken by Vidrieras Cosmo was a 144 m2 stained-glass skylight for the Loureiro Crespo old people’s home in Pontevedra. Another unusual project was a stained-glass window fired with engraved sepia tones for a home in Betanzos.
Other projects include a depiction of the… view of Santiago Cathedral from the Herradura park for a private dwelling in Santiago de Compostela, the restoration of the stained-glass windows of Café Derby also in Santiago, the rose window of the church of Baiona, and stained glass in many other churches and mausoleums across Pontevedra province.
