DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK

The family-run business Relaño Peña works in all phases of the production of stained glass windows, as well as their restoration. The design is a key part of the process in which they have introduced a series of updates (computer drawings and 1:1 scale printings of the designs). These updates help them work at a greater speed and with greater precision.

The traditional techniques which they use for the manufacture of the leaded stained glass windows are: the melting of the glass (to that aim they carry out their own moulds), grisailles, carving, engraving, framing, etc. An important part of their work is the restoration of historic stained glass windows; this is the reason behind them using techniques such as blown and coloured glass. Some other updates which ease the work at the workshop and increase the quality of their products are the temperature-controlled furnaces and the welders themselves who, even if they continue to use the traditional gas furnaces for very precise works and repairs, also use electrical furnaces when these seem more convenient.

APPRENTICESHIP

Antonio learnt the craft in a self-taught way because of the curiosity that he developed regarding the work his great grandfather carried out, since he had a brass workshop. After having studied Fine arts, he took his pleasure in painting to this craft.

TEACHING

They carried out a course in Glass Techniques promoted by the Town Council in Noblejas in the Centro de la Mujer. Once it was over, they invited two of their female students to come and help and be part of the workshop. Unfortunately, this collaboration had to come to an end when the years of the economic crisis arrived.
