Azulejos Artísticos Bondia, consisting of Ángel P. Ruiz and Juan R. Bondia, is a traditional ceramics workshop that specialises in decorative tiles, ceramic artefacts and terracotta surfaces, made with craft techniques. They produce and restore architectural ceramics such as murals, friezes, tiling, cladding, skirting or… wainscoting, as well as hand-painted panels of religious subjects, nameplates, plaques, etc.
They employ wholly traditional decorating techniques such as trepa stencilling, tubado tube-lining, cuerda seca outlining of colour segments with beads of grease, or socarrat painted ceiling and eave tiles. They paint any pattern requested by the customer, as well as restoring and reproducing historic models. Their experience has led them to collaborate with other firms in the restoration and refurbishment of some iconic buildings.
Ángel and Juan studied their craft at the Manises School of Ceramics and also learned from three great masters no longer with us: Juan Bondia García, who as well as founding the firm was a painter and manager of workshops in Manises, and at individual… level a ceramic researcher; Agustín Tevar, a ceramic and oil painter who taught them the stencilling technique for serial tile reproduction; and José Benítez, a multifaceted painter who mentored them in various signwriting projects and in techniques such as tube-lining or screen-printing.
