Cerámicas Catalino is a family firm that has been devoted to the craft of ceramics for over 70 years. They produces articles such as clay bricks, earthen tiles, adobe bricks, decorative trim, etc.
Their work process starts with the extraction of clay from their quarries in… Vélez-Málaga. The clay is then blended in a mixer, in which it is ground and combined with water and slate or lime. Where lime is used, the object’s surface comes out smoother, whereas with slate it is rougher. Once the mix is ready, the pieces are shaped into the desired form using iron or wooden moulds, then put out to dry on racks in the open air. The drying period depends on the time of year: some twenty days in spring and summer or about thirty days in autumn and winter. The dry pieces are arranged in the furnace and fired for five days continuously. After another five days of cooling, they are ready.
As an innovation in the manufacturing process, Cerámicas Catalino uses machinery for mixing clay as well as for loading products into trucks.
Knowledge of the trade at Cerámicas Catalino has been passed on from generation to generation.
Cerámicas Catalino’s employees learned the trade as they joined the firm years ago. Currently there are no youngsters in the team.
Cerámicas Catalino has taken part in countless restoration projects on monumental buildings, notably including the Alcazaba fortress in Málaga or the Alhambra of Granada.
