Javier Pedrola is part of a family that seeks to turn a common resource – cane – to account, finding ways of using it in building with the traditional techniques of the province of Zaragoza.
Javier performs all of the tasks involved in working with cane,… from harvesting it to installing it in structures, as well as cutting, drying and tying.
He works chiefly in private projects where cane is used in making partition walls, ceilings and roofs. This involves forming woven meshes of whole or split cane, which can either be given a surface coating or be left bare.
Cane is also used in making stairs, as permanent formwork into which gypsum plaster is poured. Once the plaster has set, the two materials form the steps together.
His knowledge of these techniques was passed on to him by his father.
His has taught his craft mainly in the provinces of Zaragoza, Tarragona and Castellón, where he has given many workshops and demonstrations at fairs and markets.
