The Albayzín School for Training in Craftwork, Restoration and Refurbishment of Historic, Artistic, and Cultural Heritage, known as Centro Albayzín, is a public centre that started operating in 2001 and has has since then, through its activities and courses, become established as a dynamic hub… for practitioners, firms and other bodies involved in the traditional craft and heritage restoration industry. It is a benchmark for practitioners and companies throughout Spain.
Since 2015 it has been part of the Andalusian Government Employment Service Network of Training Schools with the status of National Centre of Reference in four of the six areas of the Arts and Crafts occupational family:
– Traditional craft (ARTA)
– Artistic restoration, repair and maintenance (ARTR)
– Manufacture and maintenance of musical instruments (ARTG)
– Craft glasswork and ceramics (ARTN)
The training delivered is eminently practical and certifiable through the relevant professionalism certificates or official training programmes. It ranges from courses linked to traditional trades to other fields covered only by this school, such as piano adjustment and tuning, maintenance and repair of woodwind and brass instruments, or restoration and maintenance of antique furniture.
The training is aimed in particular at unemployed persons registered as jobseekers with the Andalusian Employment Service, and is free of charge and 100% in person. The eligibility requirements are as provided in the regulations on professionalism certificates. There are three levels: for level I certificates there is no prior educational requirement; for level II, a compulsory secondary education certificate is required; and for level III, a high-school or equivalent diploma.
Moreover, the Centre has always been notable in the craft sector for the organisation of activities and events in partnership with other bodies, whether public or private, for innovation and the promotion and fostering of employment in this occupational field, or for disseminating craft.
As a National Centre of Reference for Craft, the Albayzín Centre also has functions such as monitoring, research, training, experimentation, etc. for craft practitioners and firms, civil society and institutions linked to its field of activity.
