ACTIVITY
Francisco is a master craftsman in work with marble. His projects set out from ideas proposed by his clients and involve the use of traditional tools such as flat, point or toothed chisels for cutting away stone, along with diamond discs and diamond points for… marble. He produces architectural objects such as column capitals and shafts, balustrades, lintels, arches or sculpture.
As to his work process, he sometimes chooses stone from a quarry, or he receives it from his client if so preferred. He works with marble and all other types of stone except granite.
He sets out from a series of initial drawings which are progressively transferred to the stone in a highly visual process. In the case of a copy of an existing piece or of a picture, he adapts the model to the appropriate dimensions in stone and reproduces it using a system of points, i.e. from one fixed point, the various proportions are transferred to the new piece.
TRAINING
Francisco was linked to quarry work from his childhood, when he would carry food and drink for the local quarrymen. He learnt the stoneworker’s craft from the age of just 13 in a pioneering artisan marble workshop back when all such work was done by… hand, before the advent of machinery. He worked for several years with this firm before going on to set up his own workshop. This is always open to anyone interested in learning about the craft and the marble of Macael.
