José is a specialist in carving limestone and other natural stone, producing objects such as mantelpieces, fountains, capitals, arches, etc., as well as high-precision ornamental items such as reliefs or architectural elements.
He normally takes part in the installation of his work in situ. He also… turns marble and other types of stone on a lathe to make ornamental parts, sometimes using manual tools.
He began learning his craft in 1978 at the age of 14. He worked first under the aegis of Antonio López Hidalgo, a renowned master artisan at the craft workshop known as Los Curros, which in the 1950s pioneered a transformation in craft work in… these parts.
In 1994 he qualified as a specialist in the trade and became head of production in the José Sabiote Fernández stonework company, alongside 35 other artisans including skilled workers, labourers and apprentices.
In 2004 he finally set up his own craft workshop for the purpose of doing architectural stonework with the top local firms.
From 1994 to 2004 he taught over 80 apprentices the craft of making and installing mantelpieces, with José Sabiote Fernández.
