José Luis Martín does a great range of stonemasonry. Although his speciality is walling, he also makes arches, cornices, stairs, coats of arms, fireplaces, fountains and other items such as sinks, washbasins or water-distilling stones.
He masters traditional techniques such as chisel-carving in high, medium and… low relief, or squaring of stones for subsequent dressing or laying. Besides traditional tools, he has adopted modern devices such as disc cutters, bush-hammering machines, air hammers or hole saws for saving time and effort when roughing and cutting stone.
José Luis sources his raw materials locally, so that as well as collecting scree rock in the vicinity he uses tolmos (boulders) and matacanes (stones that can easily be picked up by hand) for building. All the stone he works with is volcanic: charnera or ignimbrite, milling stone (basalt), as used traditionally for grinding gofio flour, white tuff and black tuff.
INEM practical course with the master mason Fernando Mena in La Orotava, where he learned to work by hand and with air tools. Since then he has carried on learning in a self-taught way.
