DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK

José Ramón Bailón Martín is a sculptor who works with different materials such as stone, bronze or wood. His artistic training together with his natural inclinations take him to develop all sorts of sculptures.

He masters especially the technique of carving stone from Villamayor, with which he has manufactured important works and replicas. He also works with granite, wood, bronze as well as other materials.

He has elaborated, on request, very varied decorative elements, which are a proof of his talent and dedication to the craft.

He uses mainly the traditional tools and techniques linked to the craft: chisels, mallets, pointing, scales, etc. He also incorporates the bushing chisel, even if it is just for the initial processes, since when carving stone from Villamayor he has to be very careful because of its delicacy.

He also dedicates a large part of his time to carrying out restoration works (consolidations, reintegration of pieces, replicas, etc.).

APPRENTICESHIP

Ramón Baylón, born in Salamanca, gave his first steps in the creative and artistic field at a very young age. He learnt techniques related to painting, engraving and modelling at the School of San Eloy, in Salamanca. He graduated in Applied Arts and Design and worked with various master sculptors, specializing in the treatment of very varied materials such as stone, wood or bronze in different training courses. He also specialized in casting and modelling, which led him to work with different restoration companies. He has attended courses at the CEARCAL on patinas on metal, water gilding and pigments, and on Technological Tools in Traditional Crafts (digital modelling, 3D printing and new materials).

TEACHING

Teacher at the School/Workshop in Salamanca for 4 years.

SELECTED WORKS

Among his most important works is the carving of the natural stone from Villamayor (together with other sculptors) of the façade of the University of Salamanca and the Pórtico de la Gloria of the cathedral in that same city at a 2:1 scale, commissioned by the city of Gifu (Japan).
The restoration of the original Sepulchre of Santa Teresa, in Alba de Tormes, the carving of stone from Villamayor for the portal to the Doña Brígida Hotel, in Salamanca, and other sculptural pieces.
