Los Pinos, 22 Urb. Los Frontones I – La Orotava, Tenerife
Juan Antonio began as a wood-turner in his father’s workshop, where he was employed for more than ten years. Later he took up the art of wood-carving, an activity he has supplemented with some stonework.
Most of his work has been on the island of Tenerife,… with a few projects also on La Palma. He has made a great range of woodwork and cabinetry, notably including altarpieces, staircases and sculptures, and has also carried out many interventions on architectural heritage in the Canary Islands.
In his workshop he has all the hand tools required for woodworking, including a full set of gouges.
The woods he uses most in his work include cedar, mahogany, mulberry and afzelia. In stonework, largely for sculpture, he has worked especially with volcanic rocks such as trachyte.
He was introduced to the trade through craft guilds, and his masters were Antonio Giménez Martínez and José Manuel Álvarez García. He was also trained at the adult education centre in Puerto de la Cruz.
Notable examples of his work include:
– Restoration of the fountain in Plaza Weyler in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
– Altarpiece of Our Lady of Carmel in the Church of Igueste de San Andrés in Tenerife
– Corpus Christi image carrier in the Church of El Salvador in… Tenerife.
– Main altarpiece of the Church of Mirca in La Palma
– Commemorative shield for the 5th centenary of the Church of San Marcos in Tenerife
