Juan Carlos García comes from a family of woodworkers, and his curiosity and interest in traditional woodwork have led him to specialise in ornamental carving.
In his work Juan Carlos seeks to recover past formats and models characterised by natural or religious motifs. He uses fine… woods such as maritime pine for interior structures and cedar and lime for carving.
In the ornamental carving process the first step is drawing, involving sketches and full-scale outlines. He then uses cutting and subtractive techniques to remove the material not required for the future object. Traditional carving tools have changed little over the centuries and fall into two categories according to their profile: chisels and gouges. Chisels are tougher, more rugged tools with a straight shaft, used for the heavier work. Gouges are also of steel but have a curved blade and are more suited to carving out the final object. There are a great many gouge formats with various combinations between the shaft and the cutting-edge section or bevel, such as bent, reverse bent, flat, half-round, deep or V-shaped, among others. After the gouging work, the object is honed and smoothed using utensils such as rasps, files and sandpaper.
The son of a carpenter, Juan Carlos became interested in and curious about the world of woodwork at an early age. He began learning and acquiring expertise at first by doing cabinetry work in his father’s woodshop.
In 2002 he obtained a diploma in Plastic Arts… and Design in Artistic Cabinetry at the Casa de las Torres Art School in Úbeda, and he did a traineeship in the Úbeda workshop Artesonados Mudéjares Paco Luis Martos.
In 2005-2012 he received further training in the workshop of the sculptor Manuel López Pérez in carving and also in theory, spatial vision, drawing, perspective, sculpture and new artistic techniques.
Juan Carlos has produced over ten processional floats for religious brotherhoods in various Spanish locations.
With his master Manuel López he contributed to projects such as the Resuscitated Christ of Burgos or the monumental bronze sculptures at Jamuga in Andújar, and he has also done carving… work on the main altar of Badajoz Cathedral.
