Lamardelejos keeps up the traditional process of making patterned cement tiles with the values of craftsmanship and meticulous quality.
They produce their own designs with motifs often inspired by the art, architecture or landscapes of the area (the Vega de Granada district) and the nearby monumental… city.
They use the original tile-making technique. This involves first making the layer that is to bear the design, called cara vista or huella, consisting of one or more mixes of extra-fine aggregates, cement and inorganic pigments. These assure stability in the colours. The mixes are poured into the compartments of a template called a trepa, reproducing the desired pattern. Once the design is complete and the template has been removed, the remaining layers are poured in and the tiles are pressed. They are then demoulded and set aside until a high strength is reached after a setting process of several weeks.
Cement tiles are artisan, traditional, sustainable artefacts thanks to their great durability, and are highly versatile in their designs, colour tones and applications.
They learned the trade in various workshops with master artisans. Later they turned their workshop in the Vega de Granada into their own laboratory.
