Pedro Antonio Fernández Díaz was a painter before he took up his current trade of stone-carving, which he has plied for over 30 years. His expertise with pencil drawing and oil painting has enabled him to produce designs for sculptures to be found in iconic… locations such as the Retiro Park or on certain facades of the Bank of Spain, both in Madrid.
Pedro works with both electric and traditional tools. In the case of reproductions, his first step is to gather all the available data on the project, using photos or clay or plasticine models. He then shapes a large stone block using an angle grinder with a 30cm diamond disc, for cutting and removing stone, and a round mallet, with which he progressively extracts surplus pieces. There follow several days of roughing, design and carving of the piece itself, on which the motifs to be sculpted are progressively drawn. Next comes a stage of shaping using a small angle grinder with a 12cm disc, a pneumatic hammer, and smooth or tooth chisels. To finish the article he uses various emery papers for sanding it with different textures.
Most of his work is with limestone, though he has also worked Macael marble, granite and sandstone.
Almost all of his work has been for various stone construction firms.
Self-taught. Before becoming a stone-carver, he did pencil drawings and oil paintings – skills that helped him greatly in gaining expertise in stone-carving.
