Vilamateo, Liñares, 27 – 15638 Vilarmaior
Javier Martín specialises in the craft of traditional and ornamental wood-turning. He works at Taxus, his country studio in Vilarmaior (Galicia). There he stores and naturally dries his raw materials as well as showing and selling his work.
By preference he uses native woods, both dry… and green. He renders them with natural oils, priming with water-based or nitrocellulose varnish and applying natural beeswax and carnauba polishes as finishes.
As a craftsman he seeks to draw out his work’s aesthetic and functional potential. This can be seen in objects such as the newel posts for stairs which he often makes for refurbished or new houses, as well as in balusters, furniture legs, door knobs and a whole range of functional and decorative artefacts.
Self-taught.
As well as working as a wood-turner, Javier gives classes in the crafts of turning (spindle, outside, eccentric or ornamental turning, with natural edges, finishes or tapering) and staining (firing, texturing and carving), sometimes with other materials inserted. These courses are for individuals in general… as well as for students and teachers in vocational woodwork training, tailored to various levels and numbers of participants. He also offers specialist courses for cabinetmakers and wood-turners.
