Alberto Rodríguez makes all sorts of traditional wrought ironwork, such as gates, railings, grilles, swords, candleholders, lampposts or decorative artefacts.
Alberto crafts each object in his forge. Ornamental items are forged and also shaped on a lathe if the design so requires. All joints are formed… with rivets, loop ties and cramps using the traditional techniques of the trade, avoiding welds.
In this work the first steps are to take measurements and to prepare and draw a design. The forging process involves heating the iron in the forge with coal and a fan or bellows. Once the iron reaches a certain temperature, appreciable from its reddish colour, Alberto transfers it to the anvil for forming with a hammer. The process of heating the iron needs to be repeated several times until the desired result is achieved. Once the parts have been made in the forge, they are fitted together.
His forge has been updated and upgraded so as to optimise costs while maintaining the same quality of work. These changes notably involve moulds, presses, utensils, lathes and other tools. Alberto has also introduced innovations such as a mixer-press for melting brass honey billets or a casting machine with a built-in heating element.
Alberto Rodríguez began his apprenticeship at the age of just 10, in his father Fernando’s artisan blacksmith’s shop.
